The idea came from a favorite memory of mine from elementary school, where we’d have Book Bingo, and winners would get to pick out a new book. I wanted to recreate that, but in a setting focused on bringing people together—especially for the girls, gays, and theys—with a sober, relaxed vibe.
This time, I really wanted to encourage attendees to come solo, which felt like a bit of a challenge, but it worked out beautifully. We had 12 spots for $10 each, keeping it small and intimate so everyone could really connect.
Happy Lemon was an easy choice for the venue. I had been there on a date and loved their unique boba drinks—like cream cheese foam and bubble waffles—and thought it would be the perfect, fun spot for a low-key Friday night event.
The night started with icebreakers to get everyone comfortable, followed by a few rounds of bingo where winners picked out new books to take home. It felt casual and laid-back, exactly the kind of atmosphere I was hoping for.
What surprised me the most was how effective the Facebook ads were—several attendees mentioned finding the event that way, which was a great reminder of how impactful digital marketing can be.
I’m really grateful to everyone who came out, and to Happy Lemon for hosting us.
This was a great reminder that small, community-focused events can really bring people together, and I’m looking forward to planning more through Eating Out Austin.
